Ups and Downs of Visual Cortex
Receptive fields are sharper when measured using down-state spikes.
Receptive fields of sixteen neurons (two groups of 8) in primary visual cortex of a macaque monkey. The top row of each group shows fields computed using down-state spikes; the bottom row used up-state spikes. The fields derived from down-state spikes show more clearly defined black or white regions against the salt-and-pepper background.
