Nanotechnology-enabled imaging techniques
The field of nanotechnology has made significant contribution to the field of biomedical imaging. Investigation of nanotechnology-enabled imaging techniques is one of the foci of the IGERT Nanomedicine program. IGERT trainee, Yogesh Patel is using silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) as imaging tool in skin cancer diagnosis. Ag NPs in fresh skin excisions were imaged using several modalities that include brightfield, confocal reflectance, two-photon, and second harmonic generation. The optical properties of these NPs offer an attractive alternative to the fluorophore-based staining and labeling of biological samples, and have potential as an in-vivo diagnostic tool. Research findings from this project were presented at the Sixth IEEE International Symposium on Biomedical Imaging (ISBI09) held June 28 - July 1, 2009 in Boston. Yogesh Patel, won first place for his poster titled, "Application of Nanoparticles in Dermatology", at the 2009 Annual IGERT Principal Investigators Meeting.
