Analysis of microscopic ocean creatures
IGERT trainee Josh Lewis has been continuing the streak of successful collaborations with trainees from the UCSD IGERT on Conservation of Marine Biodiversity. Josh and Marine Biodiversity IGERT trainee Pincelli Hull have recently submitted a paper that applied computer vision and machine learning techniques to automate the morphological analysis of microscopic ocean creatures (planktonic foraminifera). Based on the analysis and a subsequent investigation using clustering techniques, they argue for a new interpretation of the evolutionary history of these creatures. Josh and Pincelli also presented work on clustering ocean biomes at the International Conference on Machine Learning Applications (December 2008).
