Active Handrest assists in precision drawing
Co-PI Provancher, in collaboration with a current IGERT trainee and a past IGERT Trainee has developed a new device for assisting people in performing precision tasks with their fingertips, the Active Handrest, and through experiments we have shown the Active Handrest to provide an increase in accuracy of 36.6% over an unsupported condition and 26% over a fixed support condition in performing precision drawing.
Such a device can be useful for such things as assisted surgery, electronics repair, or improving quality of life for the elderly. This achievement has garnered press coverage as well as academic publications and is representative of the research the Biocentric Robotics IGERT has facilitated.
