Visualizing the results of flow simulation

IGERT fellow Nathan Lane has targeted visualising the 3D results of flow simulation in porous materials and created visuals (both stills and movies) that illustrate the complexity of flow in real porous materials, particularly real geologic samples. Visualising our flow data in 3D has helped support our claim that our mesh coarsening strategy is effectively preserving the structure of a porous material. In an attempt to create more impressive visuals we have also been exploring visualisation software with advanced surface rendering features. We are currently exploring compatible data formats for the Maya software package with the help of LSU Visualisation Service. Maya is widely used by animators to create realistic fluid flow effects, and we believe that importing scientific data into an animation environment will enhance the quality of our visuals
