Research Achievements
REU participant becomes IGERT trainee
Trainee Jenell Smith came to Drexel's PhD program in Materials Science & Engineering as a result of her participation in the NSF-funded Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program "DREAM" - Drexel Research Experience in Advanced Materials. Jenell worked in the Biomimetic Design Group, under the leadership of Dr. Ulrike Wegst, as an REU student, and is now continuing her work on bone substitutes derived from chitosan and hydroxyapatite, as a first-year PhD student. This is a prime example of the integration of various outreach programs, including IGERT, REU, Research Experiences for Teachers, as well as the Summer Mentorship program for high school students, sponsored by Drexel's College of Engineering. IGERT students frequently serve as mentors for participants in these programs.
