Course on Marine Conservation and Policy
Marine Conservation & Policy (Professor Norris, Drs. Sarah Mesnick & Phaedra Doukakis) Marine Conservation Biology and Policy focused on the biology and ecology of marine species impacted by human activities. Each lecture introduced a conservation concept and a case study. Invited guests spoke on the current management issues involved and described how data are acquired to address knowledge gaps and applied to policy decisions. The course was divided into two theme: Species of the Ocean Commons (marine turtles, highly migratory fishes and forage species) and Species on the Brink (abalone, sturgeon and vaquita). Weekly exercises /laboratory activities analyzed data acquired through various methods. Laboratory sessions and field trips provided hands-on exposure to the species discussed in class and provide experience with data collection methods and analytical techniques.
