Drug transport across skin
Rania Ibrahim working with her IGERT advisor, Gerald Kasting (College of Pharmacy) have been looking at drug transport across skin in collaboration with Prof. Johannes Nitsche (transport modeling) at the University of Buffalo. Rania has shown that experimentally determined dermis-water partition coefficients of highly protein-bound permeants like diclofenac are erroneously low due to diffusion of albumin and other soluble proteins from the tissue into the donor solutions during in vivo skin transport experiments. The use of a dialysis membrane between the donor solution and the tissue corrects the problem and dermis permeability can be correctly calculated by properly considering the resistance of the dialysis membrane.
