Assessment of multidisciplinary education

CIIP faculty published a paper during this reporting cycle describing a novel approach to assess student progress in multidisciplinary education using a simple, but powerful metric based on the concept of T Competency. The horizontal component of a "T" represents multidisciplinary training, whereas the vertical element of the "T" represents disciplinary expertise. The aspect ratio (horizontal width divided by vertical height) represents multidisciplinarity; short broad T's represent strongly multidisciplinary approaches whereas tall narrow T's represent more focused disciplinary research. We use the T metric to develop learning goals with trainees and track changes in their perceived multidisciplinarity throughout their CIIP tenure. The T Competency concept also provides us a common nomenclature as we discuss multidisciplinary education and professional goals.
