New design for IGERT graduate courses
We have instituted a new design for our IGERT graduate courses to promote thinking at the level of systems and metastructures as opposed to discipline or element specific knowledge. This enhances the integrative role of the IGERT coursework and better complements disciplinary courses taken by the trainees. Our new IGERT coursework includes a one-year methods and theory course which all incoming students are expected to enroll in. We have reformulated the advanced courses in our categories of Sensing, Modeling and Perception, and Feedback so that there are two courses in each. These courses will focus less on individual techniques (e.g. sound analysis, computer vision, etc.) and more on system principles: how human activity understanding and system modeling can be applied in experiential media systems across disciplines. The new courses are also focusing more on collaborative, transdisciplinary projects, allowing students to develop an applied knowledge of these concepts.
