SMALLab: a mixed-reality learning environment

The K-12 Embodied and Mediated Learning interdisciplinary group has continued research into the design, delivery, and evaluation of a scalable, mixed-reality learning environment called SMALLab. We are conducting research to investigate its efficacy for teaching and learning in real world schools and museums. Results show that SMALLab is a highly effective learning environment and that using it can lead to significantly higher student learning gains when compared against regular instructional approaches. We continue to partner with industry (Intel) and foundation (MacArthur, Woodrow Wilson, Carnegie) sponsors. In addition, we helped to secure new synergistic funding from the National Science Foundation's I3 program. These awards have provided international visibility for our research efforts and our IGERT trainees. This year we have reached over 600 students, 30 teachers, and 13,000 informal learners.
