Developing silicon photonic crystal sensors

Chris Kang, in collaboration with IBM's T.J. Watson Research Center in Yorktown Heights, New York, developed silicon Photonic Crystal sensors, first with theory/simulation, and then with experimental measurements. The core of the work was enabled through a 6-month internship at Yorktown Heights, where interactions with well-known researchers in the field of silicon photonics provided training in device design, fabrication, and measurement procedures. Upon returning to Vanderbilt, a similar optical device measurement setup was created for the benefit and usage of other research groups on campus. Utilizing the theory/simulation to guide the experimental device fabrication has demonstrated improved sensing performance in these devices.
