Quality and affordability of healthy foods
IGERT funded international travel for Trainee Jewell who, with colleague Gartin, mentored student researchers. The project adapted the Nutrition Environment Measures Survey(NEMS) used to measure the quality and affordability of healthy foods in the United States, to the socio-ecological context in San Lorenzo, Paraguay. This involved specifying the indicator items relevant to the local community, pilot testing the adapted survey for validity of the instrument, and measuring the reliability of student researchers who were trained to collect the data. The student researchers were part of ASU?s study abroad experience in the Global Health Program. The program included work as research assistants with Jewell. Jewell is currently completing a comparative study in South Phoenix on the form of the urban food environment. Presentations and publications are forthcoming.
