Historical fire and species composition
IGERT trainee Alan Tepley defended his PhD in Geosciences and Forest Science, which showed how historical fire in the western Cascade Range of Oregon has influenced the species composition and structure of forests over the past 800 years. Alan and his minor professor, Enrique Thomann (Mathematics) developed an analytical approach to display how changes in fire regimes, due to climate change or fire suppression, may produce long-lasting effects on forest age structure. Alan was awarded a prestigious postdoc at the University of Colorado, Boulder, to study wildfire as part of the Wildfire PIRE funded by NSF.
