Fabrication of electronic devices
Part of Trainee Jason Matthew's (Linke, UO Physics) research calls for fabricating electronic devices on semiconductor wafers. The processes and methods used for the fabrication of such devices can be done at the University of Oregon. However, as there are no other researchers who create the types of semiconductor devices that he needs, he would have to nearly reinvent the processing steps. A solution to was to visit the Nanometer Structure Consortium at Lund University, Sweden. This department has multiple research groups working on nanometer-sized semiconductor electronics similar to Matthews', and processing equipment better suited to construct his devices. Matthews received IGERT international travel funding and visited Lund University for three months in fall, 2010. During his visit, he learned many of the aspects of fabricating semiconductor devices from the knowledgeable researchers and staff. The result was fabricating eight new devices in 3 months instead of 6 to 9 months.
