Interdisciplinary polar research workshop
Trainees, undergraduates, and faculty from 4 IGERTs organized a 3-day workshop in Juneau, AK, for March '11. The programs discussed the intersection between Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK) and interdisciplinary polar research. Workshop attendees from Dartmouth, University of Alaska (Juneau and Fairbanks), University of Kansas, all of which have IGERT programs focused on interdisciplinary research of climate change in high latitude systems, and the Haskell Indian Nations University (undergraduate partner on the Kansas IGERT), gathered to share diverse perspectives of rapid environmental and social changes in the Arctic, develop a better understanding of the intersection between TEK and western science, and lay the foundation for future interdisciplinary collaborations among early career IGERT Trainees in the four IGERTs. Several Native American undergraduates had an opportunity to participate in research discussions as an introductory graduate school experience.
