Retreat incorporated into program

The Bioinfomatics Program, in May 2010, held its first Program Retreat in over 8 years, and now plans to make it an annual event. The retreat was designed to increase communication and cameraderie among the students and faculty. The Saturday program consisted of three 40-minute workshops presented by students: 1) R Programming Language, 2) Next Generation Sequencing, and 3) Crafting a Scientific Presentation; two 25-minute student research talks; a student research poster session; a mid-afternoon hike; two after-dinner faculty talks; and a late-night ?science trivia? contest. The Sunday morning session was devoted to a two-hour curriculum forum, with discussions centered on new courses and changes in Program requirements. A total of 10 faculty members and 42 students participated in the retreat.
