Cholinergic mediated brain rhythms research
In the Shors and Friedman labs, IGERT fellow Megan Anderson, is studying how cholinergic mediated brain rhythms influence survival of adult neural stem cells. She has been able to show that the amount of a particular brain rhythm called theta rhythm positively correlates with the number of new neurons that survive. This rhythm is controlled by acetylcholine and Megan is currently running experiments to determine if acetylcholine might mediate the relationship between learning and survival, a finding that would be unique in her area of research.
