Trainees collaborate in interdisciplinary research
Michelle Tigges, an IGERT student in Chemistry and Biochemistry and Heidi Smith, a student associate in Land Resources and Env. Sciences, are collaborating on a project studying dissolved organic matter (DOM) in a supraglacial stream in Antarctica. Working with IGERT faculty members, the students are working together to integrate their work on the microbiology, genomics and ecology of the system with the chemistry and proteomics to provide new insight into how DOM is generated and transformed in these glacial environments. Michelle received an Honorable Mention in this year's NSF GRFP competition and Heidi received a NASA Earth and Space Sciences Fellowship.
