Immediate-mode data analysis
IGERT-TEECH Trainee Vid Petrovic is working on the foundation for synthesis and visualization of massive data collections, based on point-based rendering techniques. This research is readily being applied to analyze data from our field sites in Italy and Jordan, allowing for immediate-mode data analysis. This allows users to interactively and intuitively study information as it is being acquired in the field, and to use this information to develop new hypotheses. Vid's research has lead to an invited paper in IEEE Computer (in press) with focus on applied computational archaeology, a submission to IEEE Visualization 2011 with focus on the fundamental underlying theory (under review), as well as an entry to the IGERT poster competition. As part of our translational research, these new techniques are also being vetted as new analytics tools in the context of massive scale data collections being acquired for the Moon and Mars by our research collaborators at NASA.
