Communicating across disciplines
Learning to "Speak the Language of Other Disciplines:" The defining characteristics of IGERT trainees and associates, compared to graduate students not involved in the program, are the ability to communicate effectively across disciplines and to understand multiple disciplines' perspectives on issues, research, and outcomes. Because of the focused exposure to other disciplines through the core research teams and the weekly seminars, participants are learning to speak the "different languages" of the disciplines, giving them the ability to communicate effectively in multidisciplinary teams, as well as the ability to present data in different manners to different audiences.
