New career development workshops
Career development workshops were developed by the PI and targeted science graduate students and post-docs. These events were open to trainees and all other interested individuals. Topics covered include: grantsmanship, an orientation for new science students, careers in academia, careers in the public and government sectors, scientific writing, and presentation skills. An average of 28.5 people attended each event. In terms of format, for example, the orientation program featured comments from the Associate Dean for graduate studies in our college, graduate coordinators from two science departments, and a presentation from our science librarians. The Careers in Academia event featured two science department chairs and one newly hired faculty member; each participant was from a different department. 94.7% of students responding to a survey on the workshop series would recommend it to a friend. Attendees included students from seven different departments.
