Colloquia and research showcase encourage interdisciplinary discussion

Through our colloquium series and research showcase, trainees are given a number of opportunities to learn about significant research being done in other fields and to explore possibilities for their own work. Our colloquia cover a wide range of disciplines, so to prepare trainees, speakers are asked to provide a paper in advance of their talk. Trainees meet with the faculty host to discuss the paper, asking questions and developing a context. After the talk, trainees and associates meet privately with the speaker, then a smaller group of trainees have lunch with the speaker, talking informally. To supplement this exposure to work outside the university, we facilitate collaboration locally through the research showcase, a poster session. Trainees not only learn more about each others' work, they are also introduced to faculty and graduate student researchers from across the university, inviting unexpected and productive collaborations.
