Trainees get hands-on experience in computational research
A second educational module gave IGERT Fellows hands-on experience in computational research. Prof. Derek Warner developed a three-week-long course that gave students a practical overview of the underlying theory, implementation, and limitations of the finite element method. Students gained hands-on experience building, solving, and interpreting real-world mechanics and heat transfer problems using the commercial software package Abaqus. This experience gave students a foundation for talking other field problems relevant to their research.
