Achievement

Kipton Barros has pursued his Ph.D. research working in materials science, statistical physics, and granular matter. His research has been honored by the 2009 APS March Meeting GSNP Student Speaker Award (with a cash prize of $1000). As minor project, Barros collaborated with Brower and Rebbi and fellow IGERT students on the application Graphics Processing Units (GPU) technology to Lattice Quantum Chromodynamics (LQCD), an area of research with enormous computational demands. Using the GPU, Barros developed code to perform LQCD computations with a price/performance ratio that is superior to conventional technology. This work has established Barros as an expert in optimizing code the GPU: he has since given several seminars and consulted in the field. "Being an ACES trainee - Barros says - has prepared me for an interdisciplinary postdoctoral position: I will begin research in applied math and materials science at Northwestern University in August 2009."
