Internship and international research opportunities

In the context of the special educational opportunities the MEID-IGERT supports, the following Trainee Educational Achievements occurred during this reporting period: 1) Ted Cosart completed an internship at the NIH Rocky Mountain Laboratory working with Dr. Steve Porcella on advanced bioinformatic approaches for genome assembly and genetic applications of extrapolated exon capture data across different species. 2) Julie Betsch traveled to Tanzania, Africa for 3 months to access samples and develop collaborations with the Serengeti Lion Project and the Serengeti Carnivore Disease Project. 3) Brian Hand spent two months in Melbourne, Australia with Dr. Paul Sunnucks, director of the Molecular Ecology Research Group at Monash University to study birds in fragmented landscapes, providing a key networking opportunity and potential postdoctoral or career opportunity applying the landscape genetics algorithms he is developing for his PhD thesis to real-world ecological problems.
