Trainee Achievements
Trainee form leadership groups with broader community
Our IGERT trainees continue to form leadership groups that engage in trainee-driven scholarly communications with the broader research community. In 2011 a group of four trainee alumni published an editorial in the journal Indoor Air entitled “Progress and priorities in reducing indoor air pollution in developing countries”. In the editorial they expanded on previous calls to action to reduce the health burden of indoor air pollution around the globe and described a student symposium they designed and ran at a recent international conference, Indoor Air 2011 (the symposium was funded by the NSF IGERT program). Through the editorial they advanced an important research agenda through one of the most widely known journals in the field, a task generally reserved for senior faculty and researchers. Importantly, they also encouraged other students worldwide to pursue leadership roles early in their careers by planning, running, and engaging in important conferences and workshops.
