Field program in Ivvavik National Park, Canada

Trainee Andrew Stuhl designed and conducted a 5 day field program in Ivvavik National Park (Yukon, Canada). The objective of this program was to explore the culture, history, and ecology of the park along with twelve high school biology students. Andrew was responsible for 1) selecting activities, such as terrestrial plot studies; stream studies; interviews with elders; hikes; group reflection and assessment; 2) fundraising nearly $36,000 to support the program, 3) facilitating activities in the park during the program. The 5 days activity allowed Andrew to pursue his own research aims (the park and its history/ecology are relevant to his dissertation). In addition, Andrew was able to learn and teach along with scientists and staff from Parks Canada, an Inuvialuit elder from Inuvik, and the high school students invited to participate in the program. This interdisciplinary approach to research and education is part of both the IGERT mission and the mission of public scholarship.
