Team of trainees develops new course
A team of students (Denise Koessler, Elizabeth Johnson, and Jordan Utley), under the guidance of two faculty advisors, developed and implemented a course entitled “Survey of Biology for Computational Scientists.” This course is a valuable addition to our core cross-disciplinary training curriculum, improving engagement of computer science students with computational biology research on campus. This course also served as a major achievement for the trainees involved. Substantial research into “best practices” of curriculum development was required, and the SCALE-IT students conducted a formal assessment with the intention of publishing the results. Also, Jordan and Elizabeth taught the course, acquiring rare training in graduate course instruction. The two did a fantastic job, and the 13 enrolled students valued greatly their determination to offer the best possible experience. Jordan is currently working on a second offering for the next academic year.
