Trainees create activities for Women in Computing conference
SCALE-IT students (Sally Ellingson, Denise Koessler, Rachel Adams, Caroline Rempe, Beth Johnson) created activities for the TN Grace Hopper Women in Computing conference. These activities included a “Birds of a Feather” roundtable about the challenges of interdisciplinary research, a folk dance activity that illustrated the workings of computer software and hardware, and an interdisciplinary science CLUE game. Additionally, they presented research posters and Denise presented a talk on how SCALE-IT prepares students for interdisciplinary research in high-performance computational biology. She won the best presentation award and went to the national GH WiC conference. The conference is intended to link women in the computational sciences together and provide an opportunity for young women to see career options in science and engineering. The activities created by this group were creative and well received and have led to a core community that will continue participating in WiC.
