Fundamental science & engineering course established for policy students
To enhance the understanding of underlying technical principles associated with energy technologies, an introductory-level course on fundamental science and engineering concepts for graduate students enrolled in Public Policy was designed and implemented and is required for IGERT Fellows. Policy students acquire basic knowledge of the fundamental laws which govern structure-property-processing relationships of energy-related materials and are provided some examples of their use in energy systems. Basic materials concepts are introduced (crystallography, structure-bonding-property relationships, and kinetics). In addition, several modules with practical demonstrations covering areas of active research investigation into energy storage and conversion technologies are incorporated into the program.
