Hopkins Extreme Materials Institute established
JHU has recently established the Hopkins Extreme Materials Institute (HEMI), which has been solidified by a $92M grant from ARL on Materials for Extreme Dynamic Environments. There is major overlap between the faculty associated with HEMI and with IGERT (over half the faculty in HEMI are associated with the IGERT). Furthermore, 4 of our Trainees have been doing research that directly supported the development of this new interdisciiplinary Institute. The Director of HEMI (KT Ramesh) cites this IGERT as one of the initial efforts that brought this group together with a cohesive intellectual direction. The IGERT initiated conversations that ultimately led to this highly successful team effort that spans 4 departments at JHU. The Trainees have also been very excited to see their work segue into a major initiative at JHU, our partner universities, and at ARL.
