ICE IGERT implements a Professional Development Seminar
ICE IGERT implemented a Professional Development Seminar to (1) raise awareness about diversity in the engineering workplace among engineering students, including the current percentages of women and minorities at different professional levels and challenges faced by underrepresented individuals in these environments; and (2) to educate students about the institutional policies and personal skills, including communication styles, negotiation styles, and management styles, that facilitate diversity in the engineering workplace. Classes incorporate a variety of engaging lecture, discussion, role-play, and guest speaker formats. Bhatia (ICE IGERT co-PI) further described the curricula in an abstract entitled, “Incorporating Diversity Education into the Engineering Curriculum: How Do We Train Students to Work in Diverse Teams?” Her work was one of 29 programs selected for inclusion in the National Academy of Engineering's Real World Engineering Education publication.
