Investigating landing gear for robotic rotorcraft
Through an IGERT lab rotation, Daman Bareiss and David Dunlop participated on a project with an M.S. student Courtney Doyle investigating landing gear for robotic rotorcraft (such as helicopters and quadrotors) inspired by the feet and legs of songbirds. They have demonstrated fully passive perching in a laboratory setting, using only the weight of the quadrotor to cause the feet to grip. The work resulted in a journal-paper submission. Recently, Courtney Doyle was selected as an IGERT student to conduct Ph.D. research in our program.
