Achievement

IGERT students organized two sessions and presented a full day of talks at the Alaska Forum on the Environment, an annual conference in Anchorage that presents action-relevant science for addressing environmental problems in Alaska. It is the primary forum for communication among scientists, managers and community leaders in Alaska and is always well-attended by Alaskan indigenous leaders, state and federal resource managers, and the general public. IGERT trainees presented information from their own research and from synthesis of the literature on practical ways in which Alaskan individuals and communities can address environmental issues. Topics included strengthening cultural integrity, forest-based agriculture, reindeer herding, eco-tourism, and environmental opportunities for city managers.
