Diversity positively impacts student learning
Our educational program postively impacted student learning in a number of ways. The diversity of our cohorts had a positive influence on student learning. Particularly for our traditional students, the requirement of close teamwork and collaboration in diverse cohorts was highly valued. Evaluation data found that the UW Bioenergy IGERT’s multicultural and diversity elements contribute substantially to desired student outcomes. 2/3 of students rated “having diverse students” as “contributing to a large extent” to bioenergy expertise. The Bioenergy IGERT educational program also had a positive influence in broadening trainee perspectives on their research, and an especially strong influence on engineers’ dissertations, with nearly all indicating that in comparison to disciplinary (non‐IGERT) peers they would draw on a broader range of scholarship and were more aware of ecological and social contexts of their dissertation research.
