Adaptive management plan developed for coastal rec area

Bill Kanapaux concluded his research in the Ashepoo-Combahee-Edisto Basin of South Carolina by developing an adaptive management plan for the Botany Bay Plantation, a newly created coastal recreation area where human recreation threatens sea bird nesting habitat. The plan included a monitoring protocol for collecting data that will help better understand the factors affecting least tern colony productivity and a user friendly simulation model that can be used by resource managers to better understand the implications of their management interventions. This application of the adaptive management strategy is the first in South Carolina. Bill’s application of a complete adaptive management program represents significant advances in stakeholder involvement through the use of models to inform decision-making.
