Interdisciplinary mentoring leads to 'Stochastic Cell' project

IGERT Trainee Brian Drawert (Computer Science) honed his skills as an educator by mentoring Izaak Rosen, a junior undergraduate chemical engineering major at UCSB. Brian met Izaak while teaching ENGR-3 (MATLAB programming) during summer 2011. Izaak was an exceptional student, with perfect scores and an ‘A+’ in the class. He is interested in both biology and engineering, and thus he found Brian’s research in systems biology appealing. Izaak has been working with Brian on a research project related to Brian’s systems biology research. Brian had previously written software for image analysis of timeseries GFP-tagged yeast cell microscopy images. The goal of Izaak’s project is to extend and refine the package. Brian and Izaak plan to release the transformed package as an open source project named ‘Stochastic Cell’, providing installation scripts and documentation for maximum usability and impact to the scientific community.
