Two part training helps students communicate research

GLOBES presented a two-part Communications Module and introductory webinar in March of 2012 with the goal of helping student participants distill core messages related to their research and communicate them effectively to policy audiences. Students developed the skills needed to speak to journalists and policy-makers about their findings in a clear and engaging manner. Conducted by professional trainers from COMPASS, the training began with a two-day, on-campus workshop that included hands-on training crafting messages and one-pagers, role-playing real-world scenarios with special guest trainers, and small group discussions on new media and social networking. The on campus workshop prepared participants for the second training component that took place in Washington DC. Students scheduled individual meetings with DC policymakers related to their research interests, sat in on agency hearings, and met with three separate panels of national policy specialists and science journalists.
