Many participants identified the long term benefit of the IGERT program’s focus on interdisciplinary collaboration as a professional advantage. Participants feel the IGERT program has given them experience in interdisciplinary collaboration, how to be an effective team member and strengthened communication and leadership skills that will transition into future careers in both industry and academia. One Trainee specified that in the current employment atmosphere, interdisciplinary work is a “high priority” and will prepare participants for a variety of positions. Many feel that the IGERT traineeship will make their resumes “stand out.” Several Trainees are submitting applications and one Trainee has accepted a position and points to communication skills and interdisciplinary collaboration gained in the IGERT program as key components noted by the future employer.
