Several awards were won by the trainees, including Best Paper Award (runner-up) by Ian McKinley for "Pyroelectric Energy Conversion Using Relaxor Ferroelectric 8/65/35 PLZT and the Olsen" at the ASME International Conference on Micro/Nanoscale Heat Transfer, Atlanta, GA (January 2012); Best Student Presentation by Rita Blaik for "Direct Electron Transfer in Glucose Oxidase" at the 7th Annual NIMS/MANA - Cambridge NRC - UCLA/CNSI Nanotechnology, Cambridge, MA (September 2011); Best Student Presentation by Joshua Shapiro for "Heterostructures in Catalyst-Free Nanopillars: Growth and Applications" at the Electronic Materials Conference, Santa Barbara, CA (June 2011); UCLA Excellence in Second Year Academics and Research Award (September 2011) and Best Poster Award by former trainee Yue Wang for "Oligoaniline Crystals: Morphology Control, Hierarchical Assembly and Structure-Property Relationships" at the Materials Research Society Meeting, Boston, MA (November 2011).
