Assessment Workshop held for trainees
In the Fall of 2012, we organized an Assessment Workshop for our IGERT program. We reasoned that our Trainees will certainly be asked to either evaluate assessments or create their own. Participants included IGERT faculty and graduate students, along with our CiBER group. Professor Mark Wilson, our internal assessment expert, led the workshop. The purpose of the workshop was to expose researchers to the BEAR Assessment System (BAS), as well as, provide a working example of the system to help participants understand the development of quality assessment. The BAS developed by Wilson (2005) is a systematic approach to the design and validation of assessment. Four simple building blocks were presented that included a construct map, item design, outcome space, and measurement model. Participants took part in a hands-on calibration process that provided a focus for discussing how to create high-quality assessment of any task, project or class.
