Adaptive Mixed Reality Rehabilitation (AMRR)
The Adaptive Mixed Reality Rehabilitation (AMRR) group of our IGERT finished a 3-year long study to examine the differences in kinematic and functional outcomes between people who received a month-long treatment of either AMRR or traditional repetitive task therapy. This study is a first attempt to quantify the application and benefits of using an AMRR system across stroke survivors with different demographic and clinical profiles. The results show that overall the study participants - chronic stroke survivors with a wide range of impairment severities, times post-stroke, and lesion locations - were able to gain functional improvements after receiving either AMRR or traditional therapy; however, only those who received AMRR therapy made consistent improvements in reaching kinematics. These results suggest that the AMRR system can be used as a therapy tool to enhance both functionality and movement quality.
