Abstract word-meaning knowledge in children

IGERT Trainee Elika Bergelson (Psychology) published research showing that infants 10 months and older show understanding of abstract words like “uh-oh” and “eat”. Six to nine-month-olds do not, in contrast to their understanding of concrete nouns. At 14 months, infants show more robust abstract word-meaning knowledge. This work is important because many have believed infants show a more protracted period of not understanding abstract words.
