Ties to research groups in Tanzania
Although the MEID-IGERT doesn't have a designated international component, some mentors and Trainees have developed strong international ties with other groups performing research in Tanzania, Africa. These researchers are working to assess the extent to which domestic dogs in Tanzanian villages flanking nature preserves serve as reservoirs for viral diseases (e.g. canine distemper virus) that subsequently move into wild carnivore populations within the preserves. Collaborators in the project include researchers from the National Cancer Institute, NIH, Frederick, MD and Cornell University in New York.
