Achievement

Trainee Chelsea Schelly has spent this year completing research on her dissertation, “Dwelling in Resistance: Living with Alternative Technologies in America,” a close ethnographic study of households who choose to live “off the grid.” which she defended on May 22, 2013. The dissertation shows how alternative energy lifestyles of these individuals and communities often reflect principled rejection of the social isolation, and technological and economic dependence that is “built in” to most modern dwelling units. As a result of her interdisciplinary IGERT training, her track record of published research on energy, environment, and social structures, as well as her regular presentations at sociological conferences, Schelly was successful on the job market. She will be starting a tenure-track appointment at Michigan Technological University in August, 2013.
