Best Student Paper Presentation Award
Former IPEM trainee Adam Boyette received the Best Student Paper Presentation Award from the Evolutionary Anthropology Society of the American Anthropological Association in November 2012 for his paper entitled "Children’s Strategic Learning and the 'Vertical Default Hypothesis': An Observational Account of Cultural Transmission Among Aka Foragers and Ngandu Farmers of the Central African Republic." He observed a variety of social learning processes throughout children's daily lives, and noted that they spend less time learning as they internalize cultural knowledge, skills, norms, values, and beliefs. A finding of theoretical importance is that social structure and cultural norms affect the correspondence between social learning processes and cultural transmission modes.
