Trainees granted beam time at the SNS at ORNL
Erika Saffer (ICE IGERT trainee, chemical engineering) and Joseph White (former ICE IGERT trainee, chemical engineering) were granted beam time on the EQ-SANS instrument at the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) in Oak Ridge, TN. Joining Erika and Joe on this trip was Dr. Courtney Morgan, an industrial senior scientist from Ciba Vision/Alcon, who has an ongoing collaboration with the Bhatia research group. The experiments involved measurements of the structure of multicomponent hydrogels for biomaterials applications. The nanostructure of these systems is key to the transport of oxygen and nutrients through the gels and to their overall mechanical properties. Exciting preliminary results yield insight into novel thermoresponsive mechanical behavior exhibited by a series of gels designed by Joseph White.
