Trainee works on climate change and water issues in Peru

Laura Read is spending six months in Peru for an internship run through the climber scientist program funded by USAID working with the Mountain Institute on climate change and water issues in the Andean mountains of Peru. She is focusing on three projects in the region. Assessing feasibility of small scale technical water projects in rural communities, water management and capacity building in Lake Paron, and piloting the use of mobile phone technologies to collect water and climate data real-time in the field. This experience enables Laura to test new technology for monitoring and collecting water quality and climate data in rural communities, develop a portfolio of assessments for water projects in the Ancash region, and create a workshop series example for water management and capacity building to address conflicts in a watershed. Laura has the opportunity to learn about working across multiple sectors to address climate change related water conflicts and management.
