Lipoic acid as a beneficial micronutrient for elder health
Tory Hagen, an IGERT Co-Investigator and healthspan researcher, studies alpha-lipoic acid and its potential as a beneficial micronutrient for improving elder health. Dr. Hagen’s recent pilot study with lipoic acid utilized subjects from the Center for Healthy Aging Research’s human subject registry, a resource available to all IGERT faculty and trainees. It was found that plasma levels of lipoic acid were much more variable in older subjects than younger subjects, suggesting that age needs to be taken into consideration when developing a supplementation plan.
